Why Do Children Get Constipated?

Have you ever heard of a parent being concerned because their young child wasn’t pooping? Parents typically go through a lot of added concern and stress in these scenarios, and some may turn to potentially harmful medications such as laxatives. Have you ever thought of chiropractic care as a natural solution? We have seen multiple children in our office whose parents brought them in because of constipation issues. One success story is of a beautiful 6 month old daughter who hasn’t pooped for a few days, according to her parents. After the very first adjustment, her mom called us within an hour to tell us that her daughter pooped!! Imagine how excited her mom was! We recently had another family bring in their 13 month old daughter for constipation and irregular bowel movements. The morning following the first adjustment, her mom called to tell us that her daughter had 2 large bowel movements that morning!

Why do children get constipated?

There can be many reasons why a child can become constipated, ranging from diet, stress, amongst other things. But the most common reason is actually an interference in the nerves innervating the digestive tract. What does this mean? The nervous system is made up primarily of the brain, the spinal cord, and all the nerves. Because the nervous system controls everything in the body, a multitude of symptoms can arise when there’s an interference somewhere in the nervous system. In this particular case, the nerves innervating the digestive organs come from the low back and the pelvis. As a young child is sitting on mom’s lap or any unlevel surface, the pelvis can potentially become misaligned and create an interference in the nervous system, which can lead to constipation. As the child is learning how to walk, what often happens? The child ends up falling over and over right? Although it may not seem like much, can you imagine yourself constantly falling multiple times on your behind for an entire week? This is exactly what happens to a child as they are learning how to walk. The constant falling can create a shift in the pelvic structures, leading to an interference in the nerves, which can lead to constipation. It’s important to correct the pelvis misalignments in children to optimize the structure and remove any interferences in the nervous system, allowing the child to have regular and normal bowel movements.

How can Keystone Chiropractic help?

Because pelvic misalignments is a top reason why children get constipated, that’s the first thing we will check. Through specific tests, we can determine which direction the pelvis has misaligned, and we will provide a gentle adjustment to encourage the pelvis the resume it’s normal position. By normalizing the structure of the pelvis, any nerve interferences to the digestive tract are removed, and the constipation is addressed at it’s source. Our goal at Keystone Chiropractic is not to manage the symptoms that a child may present with. Our goal is to find what’s causing the symptom to occur, and to address the cause rather than the effect. In other words, we can treat the symptom of constipation through laxatives, or we can address the cause by correcting the pelvis misalignments. We choose to address the cause and allow the child to live a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life.
