Can Your Plano Chiropractor Alleviate Numbness and Tingling?

There are a variety of conditions that can result in numbness and tingling. For instance, diabetes, spinal damage, and even just sleeping in the wrong position can lead to these symptoms.

But when you have numbness and tingling, there’s only one thing on your mind: how to get rid of it. To this end, your local Plano chiropractor can be a big help. This post will provide an overview of numbness and tingling symptoms and demonstrate how chiropractors can help individuals who suffer from these issues.

What Causes Numbness and Tingling?

As was mentioned in the introduction, there are tons of underlying issues that can lead to numbness and tingling. In this section, we’ll dive into some of the top conditions that can cause the symptoms in question.

Back Pain

Numbness and tingling can often stem from issues in the spine. For example, a lumbar, thoracic, or cervical radiculopathy can lead to numbness in various areas of the body. Specifically, lumbar radiculopathies may result in numbness in the foot and/or leg.

Back pain and radiculopathies may occur due to trauma, poor posture, or even just for no obvious reason whatsoever. These causes of numbness and tingling generally take a long time to resolve. However, skilled chiropractors can help patients recover their sensation much more quickly than they would on their own.

Diabetes

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the most common metabolic diseases seen in people today. This issue is related to blood sugar regulation issues, and there are three main types of Diabetes Mellitus.

In type I DM, the patient is unable to produce enough insulin, the hormone responsible for taking blood sugar out of the bloodstream to deposit it in the cells of the body. These individuals must inject insulin into their bodies in order to regulate their blood sugar through external methods.

Type II DM is a similar issue. However, patients with type II DM are able to produce sufficient amounts of insulin, but their bodies are not “sensitive” to the insulin. This means that they are also not able to adequately regulate their blood sugar, just like those with type I DM.

The third most common type of DM is gestational diabetes. This occurs only during pregnancy, and it usually resolves once the baby is born. However, this issue can wreak havoc on the mother’s body throughout the pregnancy.

All of these issues can lead to numbness and tingling in the limbs. In fact, some people with DM will have so little sensation in their feet that they can step on a nail without even realizing it.

Poor Posture

Maintaining poor posture can lead to numbness and tingling in the limbs. A forward head posture and slumped shoulders can put pressure on the nerves, leading to decreased sensation and abnormal sensations, such as pins and needles.

Correcting abnormal posture is critical for improving function and decreasing numbness and tingling. This can be done through exercise, such as stretching and lifting weights. Also, chiropractic care can go a long way toward improving posture.
