Many parents dream of a healthy, happy, and natural birth. However, many factors throughout a pregnancy can complicate that dream, such as a breech presentation or previous C-section. About 7% of all pregnancies will involve a breech. It is rare for a breech presentation to spontaneously reposition after 34 weeks gestation. Therefore, over 80% of these pregnancies are delivered via Cesarean section.
Why is my baby in the breech position?
While the child is in the mother’s womb, he/she will always position him/herself into the most comfortable position. Sometimes, a breech presentation will be the most comfortable for the child. At other times, a transverse presentation may be ideal. Regardless, the child will position him/herself into the most comfortable position in the current environment. For the child, the external environment consists of the structural integrity of the mother’s pelvis and the surrounding soft tissue. If the mother’s pelvis and sacrum aren’t properly aligned, it’ll create an imbalance in the surrounding soft tissue such as stretching and tightening of pelvic muscles and ligaments. When this occurs, the child is lying in an imbalanced womb and will always assume the safest and most comfortable position. By structurally correcting the pelvis, the soft tissue will normalize and the child has the greatest opportunity to resume the optimal head down cephalic/vertex position.
How can Keystone Chiropractic help turn my breach baby?
Many parents seek methods in order to help reposition a baby that is breeched during pregnancy. Chiropractic care has an established successful track record in reducing the causes associated with a difficult labor. A misalignment of the sacrum can contribute to uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment, and imbalances of pelvic muscles and ligaments. By analyzing and correcting misalignments of the spine and pelvis, these imbalances can be reduced allowing the child to move and turn into a more optimal position and allow mom to have her healthiest and happiest pregnancy possible! For example, a 2017 case report described a mother who presented with a frank breech fetal malposition at 34 weeks gestation. Over the course of 2 weeks and five chiropractic adjustments, her obstetrician reported that baby had returned to a vertex position! How amazing is that!
